A Letter to Lost Pet Owners

Emails received by TulsaPets Magazine on 7/20/09:

Well, I’ve never claimed to be the brightest bulb on the pole….but I did learn a lesson.

When that parrot flew off, I put an ad in the newspaper, and craigs list, put up flyers, and posted on Parrot 911 Alert.  I don’t know where these people saw the ads but I got a call from a guy with Pet Finders.  He said they map out where the pet was lost and can make phone calls to everyone in a certain area. The bigger the area you pay for the more phone calls. Being the distraught, stressed out, idiot I was, I said okay and paid them for a 20 block area. That was on Thurs. July 9th in the morning and we got the bird back about five hours later. I called them the next day and told them what happened and he said he would adjust the charge. Well as of today he didn’t. In the meantime I read about this company’s scam….they never do what they say they will. So I looked them up on the Nevada Better Business Bureau. Oh my gosh…it was quite an eye opener. They have an F rating and so many complaints it would take a calculator to add them all up. The reason I bring this up, I think it would be a helpful bit of info for the pet owning public to know about these things in case they have a lost pet and are contacted by these types of businesses. Parrot 911 Alert has all the info about these scams and I just couldn’t believe it. But then, I’m very naive sometimes. The money I spent wasn’t that much to me…heck I would’ve paid three times that much but as it turned out there were two very kind, honest ladies that got him and took him to the vet. Anyway, I’m going to see if this guy does in fact give me a credit…if not I will file a complaint with my cc company.

Later that day in a follow up email:

I also just got off the phone with my cc company and they said I have the right to file a dispute if they don’t give me credit on the charge like he said he would.  They have an address that I got from the BBB in Nevada. Was going to send you the link to the report but the bbb site is messed up and I can’t get it to come up again. I did print it all off though.

Again later that day in a follow up email:

Marilyn:  Here’s the web site.  The phone number is the one I called and talked to the same guy that called me. His name is Steve. They are in Henderson Nevada…the charge on my credit card says that’s where they’re from. http://petfindersalert.com/

Keep the Wheels Rolling

The OAA Wheels of Hope rescue/transport van made possible by friends of animals such as you has already made a difference in the lives of 42 adult dogs and 9 puppies. That is the total that has been transported from shelters and breeders to adoption facilities where they have an excellent chance of finding their forever homes. Needless to say the alternative is unacceptable.

We will be leaving this Tuesday night for our third trip to Denver with at least 40 dogs. For the first time we will be taking 2 vans, one provided through the generosity of Kyla Holderness. Also, we just brought three labs from a breeder in Missouri to Lab Rescue in Tulsa. In addition we have 2 trips scheduled in August from the Tulsa shelter. Indeed, we are scheduled through December with transport trips to Denver.

We have 17 confirmed volunteer drivers from Tulsa, Oklahoma City, McAlester, Watts, Ft. Gibson, and point’s in-between that are giving of their time (2 days for Denver trip) to this effort. We call them our “A” team and they are absolutely wonderful. We are meeting soon with possibly 8 from the Eufaula area that has expressed an interest in being volunteer drivers.

How can you help? Needless to say these trips are not cheap. It costs an average of $500.00 each trip to Denver which includes gas, motel, food, turnpike tolls, etc. So, we desperately need contributions to help keep the Wheels of Hope rolling. Please don’t think that perhaps a small contribution will not be of much help. Literally every penny counts. All of your contributions will go toward the Wheels of Hope rescue/transport effort. Not one penny goes for administrative expenses. If we are to continue this life saving program we need your help. Please do it now. No amount is too small (or too large!) and you will know you made a difference in an animal’s life…literally.

Vincent David Luna Jr. day in Tulsa

Vinnie taught me how to create this post and how to publish it on the website that he built for Marilyn at  TulsaPetsMagazine Online.  Now maybe I can use what I learned from him to give a sense of the family that his absolutely delightful parents and his younger brother Mike and his brother Tony on the phone from Pennsylvania and his dog Emma and so many of his friends all shared at Joe Station Dog Park last evening at a memorial gathering for Vinnie.  Several people spoke of the ways that Vinnie had affected their lives, some spoke of his many accomplishments, some spoke of the trials that he had endured, others just said how their hearts hurt.  A representative of the Mayor read a proclamation making yesterday, July 9, 2009, Vincent David Luna Jr. day in Tulsa, for his commitment to the establishment of the Tulsa Bark Parks.  For the many of us who had the opportunity to know him, a part of each of us has gone with Vinnie, but luckily there will always be a warm spot named Vinnie inside each of us in return.

We Have Lost A Friend, Vincent Luna

The Tulsa pet community is sadder today with the passing of Vincent Luna.  He became a friend to our pets by his untiring commitment to the Tulsa Dog Parks and a friend to many of us who came to know him in his 10 years in Tulsa.  Vinnie has gone to where diabetes can’t hurt him anymore, but we will miss our friend.
