Hundreds of feet and paws will soon hit the pavement for Parkside Psychiatric Hospital & Clinic’s annual TULSA DOG RUN: By Your Side 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk on October 5 at Mohawk Park.
For more than a decade, the event has raised money for Parkside’s By Your Side patient assistance program. The vital program provides food assistance, clothing, school supplies, and treatment transportation for some of Parkside’s most vulnerable patients and their families in time of need.
Although the By Your Side 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run was started in 2010 to raise money for the program, it was not until 2019 that Parkside’s fund-raising director Derek Frazier, a dog lover, decided to incorporate dogs into the event. Naturally, dogs make the event more fun, but they also reinforce the importance of pet companionship for mental health and well-being.
“The event brings together a community of dog owners and animal lovers who want to make a difference in the lives of others and their furry friends,” Parkside’s website explains. Whether receiving support from the program or participating in the event, it’s a win-win for the well-being of all involved.
Frazier says the event is a highly anticipated highlight on the Parkside calendar because it directly supports the hospital’s patients who are struggling to provide basic needs — “stuff that’s easy to take for granted until you’re in a tough spot.”
“Last year alone, we were able to help nearly 6,000 people with these essentials, and this event is key to making that happen again,” Frazier says. “Plus, it’s just a fun way to get the community together for a great cause.”
The By Your Side assistance program allows Parkside to step up for its patients when they need it the most, Frazier says. “Mental health challenges are hard enough, but when you add financial stress to the mix, it can feel impossible. That’s where we come in — providing things like food and hygiene products so people can focus on getting better, not just getting by. It has been a game changer for so many families, and we’re really proud of that. The support we get from the TULSA DOG RUN makes it all possible.”
Last year, more than 300 people participated, and the event netted more than $42,000 for the program. This year, Frazier projects that more than 500 participants will join in the cause.
