Welcome to the dazzling world of Rally Obedience (Rally-O), where
dog shows take a break from seriousness. Picture this: You are perched comfortably in a folding chair, surrounded by the harmonious symphony of excited barks and the intoxicating aroma of morning coffee — ah, the glamorous life of a dog-show spectator!
The show rings sprawl out before you, transforming into a lively stage. As you rub the sleep from your eyes, a dynamic duo catches your attention. Armed with hope and the ability to decipher signs like ancient runes, they embark on a journey that is
part obedience, part interpretive dance, and entirely entertaining.
They enter the ring nearest you, and in front of them are many signs to guide this pair through obedience exercises. Depending on the competition level, a leash might be used as the human member of this team guides the pup through a delightful cascade of commands — stops, sits, stays, left and right turns, circles, jumps, and downs. Today’s performance showcases elegance as the canine companion gracefully stays with the handler, the leash hanging as loosely as the most fleeting New Year’s resolution — or so the handler hopes.
Now the million-dollar question begs an answer: Who steals the spotlight, the dog or the handler? The unequivocal response is both. This unbeatable partnership, a collaboration between dog and human, crafts a masterpiece in this laid-back obedience competition, captivating the audience and inciting laughter as the dog’s playful antics unfold because the dog sees the ring as a playground.
What makes Rally-O such a growing, crowd-pleasing sport? After teams complete an introductory obedience class, the question arises: What comes next? Rally is the answer, providing a fun extension of the fundamental pet-dog obedience training. It also serves as a delightful gateway into the world of dog shows, with many enthusiasts never really leaving Rally once they catch the obedience-show bug.
Today’s training landscape emphasizes the smoothness of movements, impeccable downs and stays, graceful jumps and retrieves, and most important, the unique relationship between the owner and the furry companion. In the show ring, those exercises transform into a mesmerizing performance, akin to ballet or synchronized dance, leaving spectators in awe and reinforcing the profound bond between humans and their canine friends.
The Merits of Rally-O
Rally-O combines obedience and agility training that involves several factors.
Communication. Rally-O embraces various forms of communication between the handler and the furry costar — voice cues, hand signals, clapping, and leg patting are all allowed.
Teamwork. Like all obedience sports, Rally-O focuses on the bond and teamwork between the handler and the dog. It’s a collaborative effort to navigate a course adorned with signs.
Variety of exercises. Rally-O courses present an array of obedience exercises sits, stays, heeling, turns, and recalls. The course design varies, providing different challenges in each competition. Handlers must follow the signs and complete the corresponding exercises, keeping their minds sharp and their dogs engaged.

Relaxed atmosphere. Rally-O competitions are known for their casual and friendly vibe. The joy of competition and the camaraderie among participants shine through.
Inclusivity. Rally-O is open to dogs of all breeds and sizes, including purebreds and mixed breeds. It breaks down barriers and encourages participation from various canine companions.

Low entry barriers. Getting started in Rally-O does not demand extensive training or expensive equipment. It’s a remarkably accessible dog sport that beginners can enjoy.
Social interaction. Rally-O competitions provide a venue for dog owners to socialize and compete against other teams in a fun-filled environment. The sport fosters a community of individuals united by their love for dogs and a shared passion for obedience training.
A Rally-O Journey
In the Oklahoma City and Bethany area, you can embark on a Rally-O journey at one of the oldest American Kennel Club groups in the state — the Oklahoma City Obedience Training Club (OCOTC). This not-for-profit club boasts volunteer instructors, many with obedience titles, ready to guide you and your furry companion through the thrilling world of dog obedience.
Starting with novice rally, you can learn how to handle your leashed dog as you
encounter 10 to 15 signs that guide you through fundamental obedience exercises. Next is the intermediate level. Your dog is still on a leash, and you and your dog navigate through 12 to 17 signs, leading to more engaging challenges.
At the advanced level, your dog is off the leash, which introduces spectators to your canine’s entertaining antics. At the excellent level, jumps are introduced, giving your dog another opportunity to show off an unpredictable and always exciting performance.
The master level is the pinnacle for dogs with a Rally-Excellent title. It’s off leash, and your dog’s antics become a wild card. At that level, you envision a solid, error-free performance. You hope your canine does not decide to jump the ring gates and visit the spectators.
In summary, Rally Obedience emerges as a beautiful dog sport that promotes positive interaction between dogs and handlers and showcases the joyous essence of the competition. The blend of obedience exercises, positive reinforcement, and relaxed atmosphere make it an enjoyable experience for participants and spectators.
